The Stenographer Commission for a Stenographer; Private Collection My friend and colleague Mel asked me if I would draw a Gothic portrait of her. I wanted there to be a hint of James Whale about the drawing, so I gave her a bouffant hairstyle and Bride of Frankenstein waves. The brass Stena machine would weigh a ton, and also as a tribute to Whale it has demons in its scroll work, lots of ancient leather bound wires and odd switches, and in the centre there is a speedometer registering 'Words Per Minute'.
