The Green Man in Purgatory The ancient God leaning on a staff Although drawn for Skaler, and someone who features prominently in the story, The Green Man is of enormous significance to Glenn, both as an artist and as a person. He was first introduced to the God whilst an art student via a newspaper article, and would often think about drawing him whilst walking around Mosley Bog whilst growing up in Birmingham. This is the ancient nature reserve where J. R. R Tolkien would walk whilst planning 'The Hobbit', and is a site of extraordinary natural beauty and inspiration. Glenn collected leaves from all over Worcestershire for this drawing, and the bark of the God’s clothing was drawn from the same tree as Prince Germane's Oak in his drawing 'DreamWalker'. As a reflection of the way that our society is blinded to nature, the God has two young oak leaves growing across his eyes, and he is somewhat frail. Also, as an old God forced out by Christianity, his face was based on Van Dyke's portrait of Charles I (a downcast King), and the leaves represent his Cavalier beard, Moustache and Lace Collar.
