The Green Man in Purgatory The ancient God leaning on a staff The most mysterious figure in the story of Skaler is the Green Man.  A timeless immortal being, the Green Man wanders the world like a deposed King or a forgotten God, never quite glimpsed by the human race these days, but sensed uneasily by those close to the cycles of nature. Clothed in a cloak of leaves which shift when the wind moves through the autumn carpet of the forest floor or through the canopy in summer, he observes the world and waits.
