Gentleman in a White Nightgown

Illustration for Ghosts, Murders and Scandals by Anne Bradford

This haunting of a Georgian Dower House, in Bromsgrove, is a classic example of that itchy feeling of a presence in the house which is felt but not observed.  Until, that is, the form of an elderly man sits down on the bed next to you in the early hours wearing a long white nightshirt.

He does not sound malign in the reported haunting, simply misplaced, and for all we know he went to bed in 1795 only to find, via some quirk of time, an early 21st century woman in his bed!

When drawing this it was irresistible not to remember the old man in the Will Hay films in his big nightshirt, or dear old Stan Laurel.  Hopefully he did not start playing the Ukulele.
