Beauty and the Bleat

Study for Skaler

I had written a mischievous meeting between Mariah the gorgeous vampire and Coughdrop, the miserable grumbling Clerk of Jasper Thames, for my Skaler novel.

This would take place at the Old Bailey in 1888, but although I had been there to research the story it wasn't practical to go there every day, being based in the midlands.

So, the very grand and elegant Foyer of Birmingham Magistrates Court stood in for Rumpole's stamping ground, and I spent many a happy lunchtime there, drawing whilst listening to Jimi Hendrix.
